Using AirPlay

An option for Mac users with an AppleTV

Mac users who would like to use an external display (TV or Projector) within 30 feet could consider using AirPlay instead of using a long HDMI cable. AirPlay uses a wireless link to handle audio and video.

If a wireless link is available in the location, set up the Mac and the AppleTV to use that link. Connect the AppleTV to a port on the external display with a short HDMI cable and set the external display to use that port.

If a wireless link is not available, you can use an Apple Express Base to put up your own wireless link. Set up the Apple Express Base to use a clear frequency and put up a wireless signal (no connection to internet). Set up the AppleTV and Mac to use this wireless signal. Connect the AppleTV to a port on the external display with a short HDMI cable and set the external display to use that port.

Setup the Mac to use AirPlay (System Preferences / Displays) and set Mirroring to be ON.

It is possible to use AirPlay with Windows with additional work. Click here to go to the "AboutTech" web page for details.
