Speak N Spell for Mac is compatible with Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

Speak N Spell for Windows is compatible with Win 7 and Win 8

Mac Version 1.6.0 is compiled for 32 bit Cocoa. Win Version 1.3.1 uses an installer.

Brief Description:

Speak N Spell was developed to help you practice your spelling abilities.

When you first launch Speak N Spell, the default word set of over 47,000 words is used. You can open the Word Maintenance window from the menu bar and revise this dictionary (add or delete words), use your own set of words (clear the table and add words), or load a plain text file with words. You can also save the word list to a plain text file. Make such a file one word per line and save the file with a ".txt" suffix.

The five levels of difficulty are:
Score is not kept. If you don't understand the word, you can ask to see the word or just ignore that word and ask for another word.

Mac: It is suggested that the System Preferences/Speech/Text to Speech Speaking Rate be set for Slow. Experiment with different voices. Vicki is an good Speaking Voice but you can try the others.

Windows: It is suggested that the Text to Speech Speaking Rate be set a bit slower than Normal.

The difficulty level and the Dictionary Word set are saved between sessions.

Speak N Spell GUI

Above you see Speak N Spell being used at the Mixed level of difficulty (all dictionary words are used). The word "collectively" has been typed. Clicking on the "Enter" button (or clicking the RETURN key) will input your answer.

Above you see the Word Maintenance window. From this window you can select the Default Word Set of over 47,000 words, clear the table and enter your own word list, or choose to load a plain text word list.

The Default Word Set may be appropriate for adults but it is suggested that the user make his own word list with familiar words for children. Students can make their own word set to practice their spelling assignments. It's easy and it's fun!
