Listen! for Windows is compatible with Win 7 and higher.
Windows Version 1.0.1 uses an installer.
Is there a sound that brings back memories or brings you particular pleasure? For some, that might be a dinner bell, a train whistle or the call of the loon in the wild. That is called an audible anchor. Listen! helps you repeat that experience any time you wish. Listen! can also be used as a friendly timer to let you know your study time, nap time, exercise time, etc., is up.
When you launch Listen! you see a small, simple Control Window with two pushbuttons. Click on the "Setup" button to bring up the Setup Window.
The Setup Window provides a choice of three modes plus sliders to set the time between sounds (ten seconds to sixty minutes). When you first launch Listen! a folder titled "ListenSounds" is placed in the Users/~/Documents folder. (On Windows, this folder is created in the My Documents folder.) Wav sound files with a ".wav" prefix placed in that folder are used by this application. When you next launch Listen! these sound files will be recognized and used. You can add new sounds to this folder.
Select the "Use Random Sound" mode to choose at random one of the sounds in the "ListenSounds" folder.
Select the "Step Through Sounds" mode to start with the first sound in the "ListenSounds" folder and work down the list until the last sound file has been heard and then the the list repeats.
Select the "Use Specific Sound" mode to use one of the sound files from the dropdown menu.
Click on the List of Sounds dropdown menu to see the names of sound files in the "ListenSounds" folder. If you wish, you can hear the selected file by clicking on the "Hear" button. Select one of these sounds.
Use the Minutes and Seconds sliders to set the desired time between sounds and then click on the "Done" button to close the Setup Window and return to the Control Panel.
You will notice that the "Run" button is now colored blue (this means that clicking on the Return key is the same as clicking on the "Run" button). Click on the "Run" button to start the timing. A display will indicate how many seconds remain before the next sound. When a sound is played, a display will indicate which sound is being heard and you will see the next timing cycle has started. Click on the same button (caption now reads "Stop") to stop the process.
Above you see that the time has run out, the sound file titled "DinnerBell.wav" is playing, and a new timing cycle is beginning.
You can minimize Listen? and let the program run in the background with sounds played at the selected interval.
All settings are saved between sessions for use with the next session.
A folder of sample sound files recorded by the developer (not copyrighted) is provided for you to experiment with Listen! until you make or download your own anchor sound files.
